Alright babe, today I am spilling the secrets and my insights all around paid collaborations even when you have a small following. A lot of people think you have to have a huge following to get paid brand collaborations and I will be the first to say this is completely false!

Brand collaborations & campaigns usually come down to only a few factors; which are:
- Audience – where the majority of your followers are from.
- Location – where are you from and where do you currently reside in.
- Engagement – what is your follower count, likes and comments look like.

However, getting paid sometimes it’s just NOT that simple!
The industry is overly saturated which makes it that much harder to get the attention of brands you love & earn an income at this! Trust me, if have come to the right place!

Do you have a small social media following?
Does the term micro-influencers mean anything to you? Don’t think having a small following is a BAD thing because it isn’t! If you have a small niche following click here and STOP Underestimating Your Small Following Micro Influencers.

Don’t really know how to approach brands or PR agencies?
Timing is everything but also you have to have the right email to get that attention. James Nord from Fohr Card briefly mentions it here, however, for you babes who really want the juicy insights on how you can start Getting Invited To PR Events For Brand Product Launches, just click here.
Getting The Brands Attention
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT just email a brand and ask for free product or if they have a budget. Most likely the will a) not reply and b) you will lose any chance of building a relationship with that brand or agency. Everything revolves around building and establishing relationships! I will talk about this more in a bit however, you need to genuinely start talking about the brand with your audience and have an actual conversation with the brand!
What does this mean and how do you do this?
- Express interest in the brand. “OMG has anyone heard about the new product release from @mention brand
- Open the conversation up to your followers. “Have you tried any of the products from @mention brand, really thinking about trying out x item mention??!”
- Build up the excitement! “Literally items are in my cart, should I do it?! Reply with a GIF!” Screenshot cart, tag brand in the photo.
Basically, let them know you are in the “know” about their products by using social media to genuinely build the connection and conversation nth with the brand and your audience!
Create Genuine Content
So you’ve already built that conversation and maybe at this point the brand is starting to get an eye out for you, like who is this blogger who keeps tweeting us.
Listen up, this is important!! This is not at all me telling you to create free advertisement for the company!! I firmly believe we should be paid for our work we produce because after all we are the model, photographer, editor, creative director, and marketer person all wrapped up in one shiny package.
okay, holidays are totally on my mind right now.
There are creative ways to create content genuinely where you’re not doing their advertisement for them. I’ve created two different scenarios for you:
Option 1 – before purchase
- Share why you want to try these products and open the conversation with your audience by asking them a question, @mention tag brand.
- Screenshot items or a recent YouTube/ Blogger using the product and how you’re just dying to get your hands on it, @mention tag brand + @mention influencer mentioned.
- Assuming the products are available in-store, go in person and give your first impressions! Also why you are at it, do a fun poll by asking your followers if you should buy it, @mention tag brand.
Option 2 – after purchase
- Share why you wanted to try these products from this brand, @mention tag brand.
- Open the conversation and create a poll if your followers have used this brand before, @mention tag brand.
- Share that the products arrived in the mail or that you purchased in-store. Tell your audience on Twitter to head over to IG stories as you shared an unboxing, @mention the brand on both social media platforms.
This is a truly effective way to continue the conversation but taking it a bit further with creating some visual content and again you are not doing any advertisement besides the fact genuinely talking about the products with your audience.
BONUS How I Earned My First 1k on Social Media!Strategies on how to bundle and use your social platforms to land your first paid brand collaborations!
On a constant basis, there are so many people cycling in and out of agencies and brands all the time. Us millennials, usually don’t stay put very long and like to switch things up, soo… how can you get your introduction to last and really stand out?
You have to build relationships!
This is extremely important and you really have to treat the person on the other side of the email exactly how would you talk to someone in person! Literally, as simple and basic this strategy is, it is so true!
Hopefully by this time the brand over the last few days or weeks have noticed that you’ve really started to take notice of the brand and their products! Fingers crossed!
If not, don’t get too upset, just make sure to save your “receipts”, as they say, and be sure to save those screenshots, links and Instagram Stories videos to send them over in the introduction email!
Brands and agencies love when you already are familiar with the brand and have already taken interested in their products.
I will go on how to send a proper email introduction on a later date but click here if you’re interested in Getting Invited To PR Events For Brand Product Launches and basically how I have been able to build my contacts.
Once they have hopefully replied, and if they live in your area, ask to take them out for a coffee date! Express interested in their brand and agency and how you would love to meet in person as you would love to support everything and anything they are doing. This is a really good way to get that in person connection, get in front of your competition and really allow them to get to know you better being an influencer. Pretty much, what you’re all about and how you eventually you can get to know one another!
DO NOT have this first introduction or coffee date be anything around the topic of money and trying to squeeze a paid brand collaboration.
Remember, building relationships is key! The money will come, be patient.
Okay, so what if they don’t live in your area? No problem! Hop on a conference call with Google Hangouts and go digitally! I would also probably save that digital coffee date for a time when you’re ready to pitch them a brand collaboration with your niche audience! Nobody likes wasting time, after all, time is money, honey.

Paid Brand Collaborations
Finally! You’ve made it!
Once you have gotten to the level of a brand relationship than you can start pitching yourself to these brands and agencies.
HOLD UP, maybe you’re in this situation right here:
The brand has already asked you to do a product review or test out their products, how do you successfully take that gifted product into a paid collaboration? Check it out here babe, #you’rewelcome.
This Is A Big NO NO
Don’t just send a generic email asking them if they have any upcoming campaigns and send them your rates. I repeat DO NOT do this. This will get you absolutely nowhere! I mean come on… imagine you’re in a store and someone says hey, how much money do you have in your wallet, you should buy our perfume or handbag. NO ONE DOES THAT!
You see how important it is to talk to the person on the other side of the email like an actual human being! Even though this is a business, treat them like someone you would actually hang out with, because more likely than not, you will run into them at PR events.
If You’re Going To Pitch, Do It Right
You think you are the only influencer out there that are trying to make a living out of this? lol, I hope not! The answer is obviously no, there are hundreds of thousands of influencers, out there!
Your job is to use your creativity and pitch the right ideas at the right time! After all, timing is everything!
You need to get creative and pitch brands & agencies ideas. Oh, and you must remember to never let too much time go by between all these steps either! You always want to be on top of their mind at all times! Don’t really know how to send regular emails to brands without being overly annoying, pshhh, say no more, check it here babe!
Let them know that you have taken notice of x product and would love to hop on a call to discuss this paid sponsorship idea. In that email pitch, be sure to use visuals and possibly include past collaborations, why they should work with you and send over a mood board of the collaboration idea!
Brands LOVE when you can get creative and pitch them ideas because duh, it’s doing the work for them!
You must do your homework first and see if they have worked with influencers in the past as well as if it matches your 1,2,3 factors as I mentioned at the beginning of this blog posts.
